Texas Surfrider Foundation Education Program

May 1-14, 2004

Gene, the late great Harpoon Barry, and Rachel

Gene and Rachel Gore of South Padre Island, Texas will paddle on a 12' paddleboard the entire length of the Texas Gulf Coast, a distance of approximately 375 miles, to benefit Texas Surfrider Foundation's Education Program and to raise public awareness of the Texas Gulf Coast and issues it faces such as public access, erosion, pollution, and litter.

THE PADDLE
"PADDLE TEXAS" will begin at the mouth of the Rio Grande on the Texas/Mexico border Saturday May 1, 2004 and end at the mouth of the Sabine River at the Texas/Louisiana border 10-14 days later. Gene and Rachel will take turns paddling in 1 hour shifts from 8-10 hours a day. With vehicle escort along stretches of driveable beach, and boat escort along the areas where vehicles cannot travel, the escort will be carrying food, water, supplies and communication. Check progress daily online with live reports, photos and log on SURFRIDER's website.

ESCORTS NEEDED: there are a couple of stretches of the coast remaining where we do
not yet have a committed escort, if you are interested in participating please contact us.

Volunteers are also needed in other areas, please contact Ellis Pickett
