Saturday September 17, 2005

Join us for the fall cleanup at Port Mansfield on Saturday September 17, 2005.

Plan on a full weekend of fun!

Surf, Fish, Camp, Barbq, Beach Cleanup and more. Email us if you plan on attending.

9/16/05 update:
Driving conditions are good, drove up about 15 miles last night in 2wd, hard pack and fast easy driving. Surprised that there were no mosquitos, but they may be waiting to ambush us so bring the juice. Water temp very warm 85. Weather for Saturday will be sunny and very hot, bring umbrellas or canopy tent. Winds have been hard south the past few days but should be a little less wind Saturday, around 10-15 S to SE. There was a light redtide a few days ago at Boca but this morning there is none. Surf will be small around 2' . Fishing is always good if you know what you are doing, water clarity is sandy green so not diveable except maybe the end of the north jetty. Full moon this weekend. I'll bring a large gas grill again for bbq, byo-beef. Trash bags provided for cleanup which will start around 9am until 12. Bring leather gloves. Lets educate a few more fishermen while we are there on keeping it clean, sea ya there. Quite a few will be camping the whole weekend. If you get stuck call my cell at 956-433-6439.

9/12/05 update:
I'll be driving up on Thursday or Friday morning this week and will post a report on driving conditions, surfing/fishing/diving/gigging report, mosquito report and general camping conditions. Also, after Katrina I went up camping/fishing and discovered the remains of a very old wooden vessel, either Civil War era or even Spanish Galleon, I'lll show you where whoever shows up!!

Thanks to all who helped out on the Spring Cleanup, it was a huge success!

Surfrider Foundation Central Texas Chapter Statewide Beach Cleanup Report
" The Adopt A Beach at the Mansfield jetties was a big success this past weekend. We had a dedicated crew show up to help clean up this isolated stretch of beach and had a good time in the process. There is no trash collection provided at this remote location so often times people are careless and leave their refuse behind. We did a great job picking up inumerable trash bags, broken glass bottles, beverage cans and picnic items, and left the beach in a much better state than when we arrived. A prominent "No Littering" sign was posted as well. A big thank you to the organizers, Gene and Rachel Gore, who also acted as consumate hosts and fed and entertained the crew that night. After the cleanup there were aftenoon surf sessions with Gene and Rachel showing everyone else the prime spots in the lineup. Evening brought more food and tale-swapping around the campfire. Thank you as well to the Surfrider Central Texas and Coastal Bend chapter members who made the trek and helped pick up. We're looking forward to the next cleanup.
Come and join us this fall"

FRIDAY APRIL 22, 1:30pm UPDATE: Cool front forecasted to pass through by early Saturday morning with N winds at 15-25 and a slight chance of rain with frontal passage early but skies will clear quickly during the day with highs in the mid 70's, cleanup is on regardless of the weather. Camping looks good for the weekend especially Sat night with lows in the mid 60's, may be a little breezy. Surf is typically best after a front at Mansfield with north winds so we could see some good size surf later Saturday or early Sunday! Fishing is always good either off the rocks or back in the channel or flats. Tide is high 4am early Sat morning falling slowly all day so the driving conditions will be fair with outgoing tide but building surf. TIDES: 23-Apr-05 Sat: 4:03a1.5H / 10:24a1.0L / 1:07p1.0H / 8:53p0.0L

If you surf, camp or fish there you know why, imagine driving away and seeing it as it should be. Lots of people joining in to help out, please email us to sign up and be listed on this page as a sponsor / participant. Date is Saturday April 23rd in coordination with the GLO State Beach Cleanup. Open bed trucks or trailers needed to haul away the large amounts of trash, Cameron County is providing a large dumpster at BEACH ACCESS #5.. Bring surfboards, fishing poles, BBQ pit, and everything else you need for a long day at the beach including plenty of water. We recommend wearing shoes, leather gloves and sunblock while cleaning. Safety Information Check-in will be at 9am at the south jetty, look for blue canopy tent that says South Padre Surf Co. You will receive data cards, pencils, trash bags, and disposable gloves when you check in. It is very important that all trash removed be documented, and any pictures will be helpful as well in future efforts to secure funding for regular cleanups. There are several groups planning on camping for the weekend. Email Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach coordinator Renee Tuggle if you or your business would be interested in adopting this area. Check back here on Friday April 22nd for an update on weather, driving conditions etc. If you have never been, Port Mansfield jetties is a 25 mile drive up the beach on the sand from South Padre Island, it usually requires 4WD. It is completely undeveloped and desolate, bring everything you need including a full tank of gas and a shovel. There are no shuttles provided. Seems to be turning out to be quite a weekend camping event for many! Cameron County Parks is sponsoring food and drinks, if you want to be fed please confirm how many in your party by Friday. Cleanup will be from 9am until 12pm, then its party time Mansfield style!
Thank you in advance
to all who have volunteered.
